St. Luke's College of Medicine William H. Quasha Memorial welcomes the newest and largest batch of freshmen in recent years with the Freshmen Orientation Program (FOP) held last June 2 at Angelo King Auditorium located in the college penthouse.
The freshies who broke the 120 limit of the college for its acceptable number of incoming first year students were greeted by Student Council (SC) President Arjo de Castro and were then turned to hosts, Junelle Dumangon and Ashee Banta, who gave the briefing on the 'well-rounded' Lukan doctor that every SLCM student is expected to become while mentioning the useful guide to medical school, the primer, and the forms for signing up on extracurricular activities which were all in each given freshman kit.
After which, the freshmen who were strategically divided into tour groups went to eight stations around SLCM for more elaborate orientation on the different components of the SLCM community.
The SC Station at the library lecture hall kicks start with the #IamOfficiallyLUKAN and presented its executive board with its committees, which will address the issues of the student body, and the representative positions that will be open for freshies. Their open forum brought out the topics of having multiple committees and balancing academic and non-academic work.
There was also a quick tour of the library, with little chat with the staff who are expected to give their own orientation of the library services the next day.
The lecture rooms in the 9th and 12th floors housed orientation stations dealing with topics on SLCM community, its management, components and what is unique about it, the college curriculum-including the Molecular Medicine program-the journey to excellence, and lots of stories of and tips for medical school survival.
The different organizations in the college had varying approaches in promoting their activities with the goal of encouraging freshies to join-from the formal talk from Iatros, which published the primer, to the photos of actual seminar-workshops and missions of Sagip Bayan and pictures of actual interbatch and inter-medical school games from Athletics Guild, and to the attention-grabbing short footage of Med Groove performance of award-winning Dance Company together with more music discussions featuring the also award-winning Chorale and the jamming sessions of Musicians Circle. However, the balloons of AGAPE that popped within their station left a mark on freshies through their fun game.
It was lunchtime when the freshies sampled the free photobooth sponsored by PhotoMan, and just before the program at the auditorium recommence, the SLCM Chorale gave a sample of their voices in a medley.
The afternoon of the FOP opened with the Human Bingo which granted 20 students with more highlighters, aside from the ones included in their kits, all from another sponsor, Stabilo.
Then the MC performed a number, followed by DC with their choreographer before the SC and organization heads stood to take questions for another open forum, which brought out discussions on the availability of books and ebooks as part of scholarship grants and on the use of and need for transes, both of which Dean Carandang participated in.
Marvin Castillo, Internals Vice President gave his closing remarks for the afternoon, and the Chorale closes the FOP with a prayer and finally the college hymn. [x]
