Headed by the Department of Preventive and Community Medicine, the second general faculty-student assembly was held last July 31, 2013 at the Angelo King Auditorium. The assembly highlighted three community-based research studies conducted last SY 2012-2013 by current third year students.
Dr. Carolina Tapia, chairman of the aforementioned department, hosted the event and provided a brief introduction of the studies. Each study was a situational analysis constructed based on a specific existing problem observed in the community. All were aimed to address such problems by developing relevant and appropriate programs which the students will be implementing in the community a year from now, Dr. Tapia stated.
The research studies, which are all analytical in design, were entitled (1) “Age and Emotional Support as Factors Affecting the Practices of Teenage Mothers (11-19 years old) in Old Balara and Damayang Lagi, Quezon City”, (2) “Factors Affecting Breastfeeding Practices among Mothers of Children 0-23 months old in Old Balara, Quezon City” and (3) “Correlation of Knowledge and Attitudes with the Reported Practices in the Solid Waste Management of Selected Household in Barangay Old Balara, Quezon City”. The presenters from the three groups were Ermalyn Diño, Laine Kongsun Ching and John Angelo Perez, respectively.
Several questions and comments regarding the studies were raised by students and doctors from the audience; all of which were adequately addressed by the members of each group. Dr. Brigido Carandang, President and Dean of SLCM-WHQM, articulated a number of queries. Also, he commended the groups and voiced some insightful comments, expressing his utmost encouragement for the students, especially the freshmen, to become aware of the most significant problems in the community which can be the foci of future studies.
