This year’s much awaited MedGrooveMedRhythmia 2014 drew a record number of attendees and supporters from among the various medschools around the Metro. Bearing this year’s theme of Balik-bayan, Aliw Theater on January 26, 2014 was filled with songs of OPM and local festivities that truly embodied the Filipino spirit. With seven schools participating in MedRhythmia and ten schools for MedGroove, everyone brought in their A-game in vying for championship gold, which made for an intense but nevertheless entertaining competition.
Chorale groups in MedRhythmia competed by performing their own interpretation of the contest piece ‘Limang Dipang Tao’ by Ryan Cayabyab and a medley of songs from their chosen OPM artist as choice piece. Our very own SLCM Chorale, led by conductor Matthew Reyes, brought back a glimpse of Manila sound and went on to serenade the audience with select pieces from pop rock band The Hotdogs. This year however, SLCM was unable to secure a spot in the top three as UST-FMS, ASMPH, and UERMMMCI came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Special awards such as the Best Interpretation of the Contest Piece and the Choice Piece were likewise bestowed upon the UST Medicine Glee Club.
MedGroove showcased well-known festivals from around the country while grooving alongside songs of their chosen OPM artist. The St. Luke’s Dance Company (SLDC) chose to celebrate Baguio’s Panagbenga festival intertwined with songs of Mr. Joey Ayala. With their performance, SLDC was able to bag a 2nd runner up position for this year’s MedGroove, with 1st runner up going to University of the Philippines Medrhythmics for their interpretation of Pintados, and a back-to-back-to-back win for the defending champions of ASMPH, with their version of Pahiyas festival and the music of Brownman Revival. The ASMPH dance group also raked in all the special awards for Best in Musicality, Best in Aesthetics and the People’s Choice Award. [x]
