[SUNKEN GARDEN, UP DILIMAN] – The second years and the third years emerged victorious despite a muddy terrain and an unforgiving weather as teams marched on to the Saturday games for this year’s Sportsfest 2014.
FOOTBALL
Last year was a blast for Batch 2018 for bagging the championship for the football games, and once again they proved their worth as they returned with the back-to-back trophy.
1st years vs. 3rd years
A muddy UP Sunken Garden welcomed the freshmen and juniors as they jump-started the first football game of this year’s Sportsfest.
Freshmen team captain Valencia made the first goal of the tournament.
However, junior defenders, Cua and Imperial, worked to strengthen their defense at the second half of the game.
Tension was rising as both teams ran and kicked at full-throttle to break the tie. The first game ended with a score of 2-1, in favor of the freshmen.
3rd years versus 2nd years
After a short break from the first game, the juniors headed back to the field to play it out, this time, with the sophomores.
Sophomores’ team captain Ongkeko successfully assisted De Gala for their first goal.
Diaz set the start of the second half on fire by scoring the junior’s first goal.
With hopes of turning the tables, Junior Robles also attempted to make a goal twice but were both intercepted. The second game ended with a score of 4-1, in favor of the sophomores.
Championship game - 2nd years vs. 1st years
The first half of the finals was an intense interplay between steals and kicks, where both teams struggled to score their first goal.
Both team captains are eyeing for a chance of getting a precious goal.
Valencia, assisted by Tan, managed to break free and successfully scored.
A good come back from the sophomores came as Vince Jabonero scored a goal for his team.
Both teams were on edge as the sophomores tightened their defense and the freshmen desperately tried to shoot in order to break the tie.
Sophomore LJ Dado broke through the freshmen’s defense and scored the sophomore’s second goal.
The game ended with one last goal from Jolou Ongkeko, who sealed their championship with a score of 3-1.
The tournament ended with the third years in third place, the first years in second, and the second years as this year’s football champions.
FRISBEE
Meanwhile, this year’s Ultimate Frisbee aligned with the intensity of FIBA World cup games.
The game was said to be a “true battle among athletes who were dedicated to play for their team, that it is hard to believe that these men and women are also medical students”, as described by one of the witnesses.
1st years vs. 3rd years
As batch 2017 began the game on the offensive side, batch 2019 struggled defensively for the first twenty minutes.
With Liandro Dolojan at the helm, the first half ended with the third years making a sizeable lead with the score at 4-0.
However, the first years came out of the halftime break aggressively, as they managed to score three consecutive goals through the great passes of James Ayuson.
The third years showed experience and maturity by keeping their calm and sticking with their game plan, scoring two more goals while playing excellent defense.
The third years ended the first game with a final score of 6-3.
2nd years vs. 1st years
Having lost to the third years in the first game, the first years had to play against the second years in the second game.
In spite of their fatigue, the first years managed to answer every goal of the rested second years, keeping the game close at the end of the first half with the score tied at 3-3.
As the second half started, fatigue took over the first years despite their best efforts, and the second years took advantage by scoring two points.
With Mark Aragones playing well as the handler for the second years, batch 2018 won their first game against the first years and the final score is 5-3.
Championship game: 2nd years vs 3rd years
It was a head-to-head match between batch 2017 and batch 2018 to determine who had what it takes to be champions of this year’s Ultimate Frisbee contest.
The second years started the first half strong as they led 3-1 with only one minute left remaining.
Yet, a minute is all that’s needed to energize and once again show the mettle of the Batch 2017 squad as they found ways to score two straight points as the first half ended, with the score tied at 3-3.
The third years came out running off the gates as the second half started, scoring two quick goals, giving them the lead at 5-3.
The intensity once again increased as the second years managed a run of their own scoring two straight goals as the game was tied at 5-5 with only five minutes left remaining in the game.
Valiant effort from both sides were shown in those remaining minutes as long passes were denied, bench players cheering loudly, players cutting the lanes with difficulty, and injuries not stopping these players for chasing the win.
Mark Aragones and Liandro Dolojan engaged in a showdown of who threw better as the teams became possessed of the game’s spirit.
It was a tight contest and as the time expired, neither team was able to score a goal to seal the championship with the score at 5-5.
The respective team captains, Chris de Gala for the second years and Liandro Dolojan for the third years, decided to have a meeting to determine the outcome of the game.
Point differentials for the previous matches against the first years were then applied to determine the outcome, with Batch 2017 ultimately emerging as this year's champions. [x]
