The 2013 St. Luke's Research Chair Holder Lecture Series kicked off last April 25, 2013 with the objective to recognize SLMC doctors committed to building a culture of research through twelve research chair holders. Although from varied fields, each was tasked to share their respective work and ultimately inspire the younger generation of doctors. The series officially came to a close last September 4, 2013 with the presentation of the last two in the line-up.
The event was hosted by Dr. Marissa P. Roxas, faculty member of the Department of Anatomy, and the opening remarks were given by by Dr. Brigido L. Carandang, Jr., President and Dean of St. Luke's College of Medicine- WHQM. He emphasized that although research is very challenging he hopes that through this lecture series the faculty and student body will be encouraged to pursue research in the future.
The first lecturer was Charina P. De Silva, PhD., faculty head of the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and she was introduced by close colleague Dr. Ann C. Natividad, faculty member of the same department. Dr. De Silva’s lecture was titled “In vitro Antidiabetic Properties of Identified Herbal Plants”. The second lecturer was Malaya P. Santos, M.D., faculty member of the department of Pathology, and she was welcomed by Dr. Joanne De Ramos, College Secretary of St. Luke's College of Medicine- WHQM. Her presentation on the other hand tackled on the “Public Health Research- Evidence in Support of Health Policy”.
An open forum followed each lecture where comments, suggestions, and questions were raised. Dr. Tapia praised the first lecturer, Dr. De Silva, for pursuing research in the correct manner by starting off in the cellular level. On the other hand, Dr. De Ramos, who expressed heightened interest in the second lecture, suggested the possible merging of the academe in community oriented projects to better address the health needs of those in the barangays.
To end the lecture series, the closing remarks were given by Dr. Jose P. Morgan, Vice-President for Medical Affairs and Medical Director of the St. Luke's Medical Center Quezon City. [x]
