Last February 23, students from across levels witnessed the candidates as they delivered their speeches, delineating most of their already professed platforms, in this year’s Miting de Avance, held in Dean Basa Hall.
Second year Erin Caritativo, head of the COMELEC, welcomed the attendees and acknowledged that it was the opportune moment for the student body to hear the voice of their next student leaders.
Each candidate was then given five minutes to deliver their speech—the chance to talk about themselves and their platforms.
Henson Turalde, who is this year’s external VP and is running for next year’s Student Council president, emphasized his goal in promoting the ideals of the school— that it’s not just about joining different activities, but also about improving one’s character.
His vision is to have a united student body that will bring “honour to the school” – with “skills, talent, and most especially character”. He hopes that under his tutelage and with his proposed projects, the “barrier between the student council and the student body will be broken”.
His opponent, Cheska Malubay, believes that the role of the Student body president is to act as the “voice of the student body”. She believes that the school has a multitude of talents and potential waiting to be tapped into.
Her experience with her grandfather taught her that there is “more to life than caring for oneself”, and this is reflected by her work as this year’s Outreach Committee head, and by her line of proposed projects which focuses on services to the community within and outside the school.
Jayvee Rivera is running for the Position of Internal Vice President, and is proud of his work and experience as this year’s internal PRO. His ultimate goal of increasing student participation is reflected by his proposed projects that promote “school spirit”.
Such projects include the Calendar of Activities, which aims to inform the students about the projects of the student council and the different school organizations and avoid overlapping activities.
Lyka Atienza, who is running for the position of Secretary, affirms her goal of “raising student awareness”, and that students should be “regularly informed”. Her projects revolve around transparency using all mediums of communication possible.
DJ Lopez, running for treasurer, expressed that her desire to serve stems from her “constant pursuit of excellence”.
Her proposed income generating projects aim to address the “needs of the students”, and she hopes to improve the previous system she experienced as this year’s Finance Committee head by aiming for “earlier execution of such activities”.
Unlike DJ’s opponent, Michi Austria is new to the field, but she hopes that a “fresh eye” helps in seeing things that need improvement.
She has designed projects in a view of a Lukan bound to “make a difference”, which includes creating a contingency or calamity fund which will come from extra funds generated.
She ends her speech by encouraging the crowd to vote based on the values, visions, and platforms of the contenders.
As a person running for the position of Auditor, Caroline Rosete asks for the student body’s trust and participation in the proposed projects of the incoming student council. She understands that people may be reluctant in giving out fees, especially since the tuition fee is big enough as it is, but assures the crowd that “good things will come from their contributions”.
Lorenz Villegas is running for the position of Internal PRO. He plans on maintaining continuity with the projects, but emphasizes on improving the protocols for these.
On the other hand, CJ Almazan is running for the position of External VP, a step up from his position as Batch 2019 Externals Representative.
He assures the crowd that although he can be a bit playful outside of work, he can be serious when it comes to work-related activities (his workmates in the current student council can vouch for that).
His proposed projects were formulated with his goal to “serve the student body”, which include close communication with student organizations, and pep rallies to promote student participation in interschool activities.
R-jay Agbon, running for externals P.R.O., believes that personal growth (and not just academics) is “absolutely necessary to become well-rounded physicians”.
He believes that the students “should not box themselves within the confines of the school”.
In line with this, he proposed projects that emphasizes on student interpersonal relationships, such as fundraising projects to fund external activities, photography art exhibits, and sports clinics, as well as relationships outside the school, such as those with companies, and community health projects.
His opponent, Patpy Miranda, also a freshman and newbie, believes that she has skills “tried and tested during her undergraduate years”. She aims for a united student body through proper information dissemination, and that student concerns should be heard. Her proposed projects “strive to promote the college.”
After all candidates delivered their speeches, the floor was opened for questions. [x]
