Sagip Bayan Student Group and SLCM Agape Christian Movement joined efforts to host Pathways: the First SLCM Medical Career Talk last Saturday, September 19, 2015 in the Angelo King Auditorium.
Junelle Dumangon and Shara Pajarillaga hosted the event.
The first half of the morning was held in the auditorium where keynote speakers elaborated on different directions students could take after medical school, drawing from their personal experiences as they did.
Dr Maximino De Guzman Bello III emphasized the different career paths available after medical school. He spoke of the alternative paths to clinical specialization as well as how to decide among different specialties.
Dr Maria Adelaida Manahan Iboleon-Dy presented the different training programs in St Luke’s Medical Centre and the opportunities available at the residency level as well as the fellowship level.
Finally, Dr Julie Caguiat spoke on how to get involved with community medicine. Besides full immersion into the community, Dr Caguiat presented alternative ways of involvement such as medical missions and short-term immersion programs.
The second part of the program consisted of breakout sessions.
The participants were divided into smaller groups based on their first and second choices among four specializations: Internal medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and General Surgery.
In these sessions, recognized and successful consultants gave talks about their chosen fields.
Some topics covered by these sessions include the requirements and qualifications to enter your chosen specialization, what you should expect when you enter that field, and the benefits of practicing that specialization.
For internal medicine, the guest speaker was Dr.Edward Benjie L. Magsombol, the Head of Nuclear Cardiology at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Quezon City.
Dr. Joanna Rey-Matias, a consultant from SLMC with a background in Robotics Gynecologic Surgery Severance, was the speaker for Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The Pediatrics talk was given by Dr. Mary Beth Franco Tanco, a Resident Training Officer of the Institute of Pediatrics and Child Health.
Dr. Nino P. Isabedra, a pediatric surgeon and founder of the Sagip Bayan Student Group, was the speaker for General Surgery.
To wrap up the event, Carl Cedric Celera of the Sagip Bayan Student Group delivered the closing remarks.
The first ever SLCM Career Talk was successful in what it set out to do.
The host organizations hope that through this event Lukans are now more aware that after medical school, the choices are diverse and not limited to just one career path. [x]
