December 20, 2013, 6:00 PM. It was raining cats and dogs. Foire de Noel would have been a wet affair were it held in the SLCM parking lot. It was a safe call that this year’s Christmas Party was held at the Angelo King Auditorium while the following Christmas dinner at the Penthouse lobby. It was one of the adjustments made when the freshmen, the traditional hosts for the annual party, decided to make the event a simple but meaningful fund-raising activity for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.
The event was hosted by Dr. Brigido Carandang, Jr., Dean of the College of Medicine, and Dr. Eleanor Almoro, faculty of the Department of Pharmacology, who were able to convince intern Tomas Mendez to serenade the party crowd. The rest of the program catered the audience with songs and dances from the batch presentations, intermission numbers of the freshmen, the Musicians' Circle, and the Dance Company. And who would forget the music video by the members of the faculty from the different departments?
Sweets from the four SLCM Houses – House 1 (Eximius), House 2 (Mitochondria), House 3 (House Life), and House 4 (Invictus) – were judged by three faculty members. Before the end of the program, three whisks were given to Houses 2, 3, and 4; with the last bagging the golden one for winning the best dessert.
Just when everyone thought the rain had stopped, it rained raffle prizes: from consolations (sweet cookies, stress balls, pencils) to the major ones (Littman stethoscope, trip for two to Batangas, and iPad minis!). Things got even sweeter when the Dr. Carandang announced that five students each will be given (though not that night, but definitely) an android tablet as an early Christmas gift. Finally, the night ended in cheers as Batch 2016 became 3-peat Christmas party champions with their lively dance presentation.
The SLCM family proved that holding a Christmas party is not all about wearing fancy dresses, eating catered formal dinner, nor dancing in a grand hall; rather, it is about having fun while being able to share your blessings with others, especially those in need, so that they too can have a bit of relief and somehow feel the Christmas air for the year.
